APX Interviews, Spring 2012

Rush week is underway at Virginia Tech! We have held informative meetings, complete with ice cream sandwiches and pizza, and we have bowled with the interested soon-to-be pledges! After interviews, as shown above, we have passed out the bids, and pin in is tomorrow, February 4, in Burruss Hall. We are so excited to be expanding the Metagenes chapter!

Announcing the Kim Clark Scholarship Fund

Kim Steven Clark at Metagenes 40th
Brother Kim Steven Clark

An Alpha Rho Chi scholarship fund is being created in Kim Clark’s memory. The scholarship will benefit Metagenes actives. We feel that this tribute to a great brother will help Kim continue his work on behalf of the active chapter in perpetuity while letting future Metagenes brothers know how important Kim was to all of us.

We have established a steering committee, and if you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Michele LeTourneur at alumni@metagenes.org.

Accepting Contributions
In the meantime, no donation in Kim’s name is too small, whether that be $25, $100, $250 or whatever amount you feel is appropriate. Please see the following details:

Checks made out to:
Alpha Rho Chi Foundation
In the memo line, please add “Kim Clark Fund”

Please send checks to Michele’s attention below. Do NOT make the checks out to her or to the Metagenes Alumni Association.

Mail checks to:
Michele LeTourneur
9109 Coronado Terrace
Fairfax, Virginia 22031

Checks are being sent to Michele so she can collect them and send to the Foundation to set up the fund. Once all checks are received, she will forward them on to the APX Foundation and the fund will be officially started. The Foundation will acknowledge all donations as tax-deductible. Any follow up checks can be sent to the Foundation directly once we have additional fund information.

Please let Michele know if you have any questions. If you will be sending a check, send her an email at alumni@metagenes.org so she will know I look out for it.

In Memorium: Kim Clark

Our brother, Kim Steven Clark, has passed away from complications caused by Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was 52. After struggling for over two years with the disease, he passed away peacefully this morning at Roanoke Memorial Hospital near his home in southwest Virginia. His beloved wife Bonnie was by his side to the end. In addition to his wife he is survived by a teenage daughter, Sarah. All his brothers in Alpha Rho Chi share in his loss.

For those of you that knew him personally, you know that his love of Alpha Rho Chi was exceeded only by his love for Bonnie and Sarah. His contributions to our chapter and fraternity are too many to name here, but suffice to say, neither would be what they are today without him. He has been the glue that binds us together for many years, and he will be sorely missed.

Metagenes Constitution and By-Laws

This past year the Executive Board formed a committee to review our constitution and by-laws, and more specifically the election terms and procedures for our association.  As you can imagine, we were quite surprised to find out that neither our constitution or by-laws have been formally approved by the Association.  They have been “Provisional” for almost 10 years now.

Over the last few months, the committee (and by Committee we mean Michele) reviewed the documents with the National Fraternity and has proposed a series of minor modifications to bring the documents in compliance with the National Constitution and reflect our current practices .  They have also proposed a few typographical corrections.

Below you will find links to the proposed changes along with the current provisional documents.  Please review the documents and let us know whether you vote to approve or decline the amendments by e-mail us at election@metagenes.org.  If you have any questions about the documents please contact Michele LeTourneur at mletourneur@envisionsite.com

Thanks for your input!

63rd National Convention

Metagenes Brothers at Convention

From March 25th through the 28th, Alumni and Actives from all over the country gathered in Virginia’s Capital, Richmond, for the 63rd National Convention of our fraternity.  All told, over 170 brothers were in attendance including 31 actives and alumni from Metagenes.  In addition to the daily business sessions at the Omni Hotel, participants participated in several breakout sessions on various professional and fraternal topics.  On Friday they toured the recently renovated grounds of the State Capital, designed by Thomas Jefferson, along with other sites around the city. Fortieth Anniversary Weekend

Metagenes 40th Anniversary visits 105 Lucas Drive

Wow! I can’t wipe the smile off my face, nor remove the lump from my throat! What an emotional yet gratifying weekend. It was great to see all the brothers who attended,… from the Charter Class to the Gamma Eta Class,… you’re all First Class to me! I had a great time, and can’t wait until our next reunion! It won’t be another 40 years,… promise.

40th Anniversary Celebration

I hope that by now you have received your invitation for the Metagenes 40th
Anniversary Celebration. Please e-mail me at btearle@gmail.com if you have
not.

As you are making plans to attend, you’ll want to arrange for your lodging as
soon as possible. We have blocked a limited number of rooms at the Courtyard
Marriott on South Main Street in Blacksburg. Rooms are $109 per night. As
stated in our informational letter, you need to reserve these rooms by calling
the local hotel at 540-552-5222, and ask for the “Alpha Rho Chi” rate.

Of course, there are several other lodging options in town. A search this
morning turned up the Blacksburg Days Inn, which is also on South Main St.,
within a mile or so of the Courtyard and Bull & Bones Brewhaus and Grill. The
online rate was about $60 per night, but is subject to change. The Days Inn is
located at 3503 Holiday Lane, Blacksburg, VA 24060 Phone: 540-951-1330. The
Holiday Inn on Prices Fork Road, which is much closer to campus (formerly the
Marriott), is also an option. The online rate is closer to $100 per night.

We look forward to seeing you in April for the celebration of this milestone
anniversary.

-Brian
